13A1 SW60 - X-ray Scattering

Abstract

TLS BL13A1 is constructed at the side-kicked branch of the superconducting wiggler (SW6) beamline and has been designed to provide hard X-ray photons up to 6 × 1010 per second at a fixed energy of 12 keV. An asymmetric-cut curved crystal monochromator (ACCM) was employed to offer monochromatic-beam with resolving power (E/∆E) ∼ 700. A four-circle diffractometer with a scintillation detector is equipped in the endstation to provide the capability for high resolution wide-range X-ray scattering and diffraction experiments. A round CCD detector with 165 mm diameter is used to collect the two-dimensional X-ray scattering and diffraction patterns with available q range from 0.05 Å−1 to 2.5 Å−1. To fit different experiment requirements, a number of holders have been designed for different types of sample: a regular sample rod for general X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray reflectivity (XRR), a thermal stage with temperature range from room temperature to 150 oC, a thermal transmission chamber for liquid samples as well as solution samples, and a temperature and humidity-controlled chamber for bio-membrane samples. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray reflectivity (XRR) were frequently used to determine the structures of material samples. Grazing incident X-ray diffraction (GIXD) was used to probe the in-plane structures of not only material but also bio-membrane samples. Lamellar X-ray diffraction (LXD) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) were used to determine the membrane structure of multilamellar thin film on substrate and unilamellar vesicles in solution, respectively.
