  1. Please describe the main function and the components of the Michaelson interferometer in an FTIR spectrometer. 
  2. Calculate the displacement for the moving mirror in a Michaelson interferometer for resolving the 0.1 cm-1 difference between the adjacent narrow spectral peaks. And explain why one wavenumber difference is the criteria to define spectral resolution as resolving adjacent narrow spectral peaks?
  3. (a) Explain the optical purpose for the design of a dual aperture in a confocal infrared microscope. 

    (b) Calculate the diffraction-limit wavelength for the incident radiation in the reflection measurement of confocal FT-IR microscopy and the numerical aperture (N.A.) of an IR objective and a diameter of the confocal aperture is 0.65 and 8.0 um, respectively. (P.S. Check the significant figures after completing the calculation.) 

  4. Briefly explain why a periodical change of dipole moment is the criteria for vibration transition for a molecule.
  5. How to define the spectral resolution of FTIR spectrometer and why?
  6. Give the idea of why NanoIR can deliver a nano-scale lateral resolution
